What do active duty marine infantry do when not deployed?

I was doing research and about the marine infantry men such as 0311 and as I understand it if you sign up for a 4 year active duty contract you may only spend 2 of those years being deployed in a war zone such as Iraq or Afghanistan so what would you be doing your other 2 years. Would you guard a base or what?
